The Merstham Community Fridge

What is a Community Fridge?  Community Fridge are fridges placed in public places across the UK, helping communities access free fresh food, save money and reduce waste! Anyone can use the fridge at The Hub, it can also support the food bank offer with fresh food for the food bank users.  People usually refer to a foodbank as an emergency stop gap.  Generally non-perishables are given out and at set times only. In contrast community fridges exist to reduce food waste and meets some needs that a foodbank cannot meet.

Where does the food come from? We have food donated from local Co-ops that have past their sell by date, damaged multipacks or dented or unwanted fruit. We also will have allotment produce when there is an abundance of produce. We will take the left over refrigerated and tinned stuff that LoveWorks aren’t able to give out at the food bank. The food will be checked for quality as it is put into the fridge and at the end of each day. Whoever uses produce from the fridge does so at their own risk on the principle of ‘common sense’.

There is a large network of community fridges across the UK and this short video can help give more information and give you an idea of the fridges that already exist.
